January 11 (Reported by Australia Net) — The Sydney Harbour undersea twin tunnels project, part of the second phase of the Sydney Metro railway project, has recently been approved by the New South Wales government. Seven new undersea and underground railway stations will also be built at Sydney Harbour.
According to the plan, construction of the Sydenham to Bankstown railway line will begin this year. The train tunnels will run under Sydney Harbour and extend all the way to the CBD, with trains running at intervals of only 2 minutes.
The first five tunnel boring machines will arrive on site before the end of 2018 to excavate the undersea twin tunnels. The two tunnels start at Chatswood and Sydenham respectively and will have a total length of about 16.5 km.
New South Wales Transport Minister Constance noted that the project is comparable to any existing mega-project in the world, “It is an unprecedented railway project for our great city.”
It is reported that an underground passage will also be built in Sydney in the future, connecting Martin Place railway station with O’Connell Street to allow pedestrians to cross safely.
