On January 9, 2017, the “National Science and Technology Progress Award” in fields such as technical research, technology development, and basic innovation was officially announced and presented at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Canton Tower won the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award for its advanced construction technology.
The completion of Canton Tower rewrote multiple historical records. Its structural features, including super height, twisting, eccentricity, openness, and waist contraction, brought unprecedented difficulties to the construction process, but its brilliance lies precisely in overcoming all engineering and construction difficulties. Key technological breakthroughs were formed through original innovative technologies, mainly including super-high complex structure design technology, super-high complex structure construction technology, and construction and operation monitoring and control technology for super-high twisted and eccentric structural systems. Through successful application, high-standard construction goals for schedule, quality, and safety were achieved, making it a new milestone in the architectural history of the 21st century.

Canton Tower fully deserves this national honor. It is a miracle of Guangzhou and also a miracle of the world. It reflects the ambition and strength of Guangzhou, an international metropolis, in advancing toward modernization and technological sophistication.

It is understood that the key technology project of Canton Tower was conducted to address the engineering and technical challenges of the world’s first tower exceeding 600 m. The research received funding from major national, provincial, and municipal scientific research projects. The project focused on the unprecedented construction challenges brought by structural features such as super height, twisting, eccentricity, openness, and waist contraction, and developed innovative construction technologies. Key technological breakthroughs were formed through original innovative technologies, mainly including super-high complex structure design technology, super-high complex structure construction technology, and construction and operation monitoring and control technology for super-high twisted and eccentric structural systems. Through successful application, high-standard construction goals for schedule, quality, and safety were achieved, multiple world construction records were set, and the project won the Second Prize of the 2016 National Science and Technology Progress Award.

  Main Innovations

Scientific and Technological Innovation One: Super-High Complex Structure Design Technology

In the design of the staggered-plane diagonal grid steel structure: the innovative design of the staggered eccentric connection of the outer tube of Canton Tower created a unique architectural structural form. Through theoretical research and tests on joints, the mechanical performance, failure modes, ductility characteristics, energy dissipation capacity, and stiffness degradation characteristics of the joints were identified.

In active-passive composite tuned vibration damping control: a new two-stage active-passive composite tuned vibration damping control technology driven by linear motors was developed through research. A complete set of two-stage active-passive composite tuned vibration damping control device systems was developed. The active control force was reduced by more than 80%, and the reliability of two-stage control was greatly improved. This technology broke through the limitations of single active or passive tuned vibration damping technology.

Scientific and Technological Innovation Two: Super-High Complex Structure Construction Technology

In the construction of the complex diagonal grid steel structure: innovative high-precision construction control methods were developed through research for the planar pre-deformation of segmented outer-frame steel structure columns, ring beams, and diagonal braces, as well as staged vertical pre-deformation. The GPS satellite positioning system was used to assist in achieving accurate three-dimensional dynamic measurement. This solved the highly difficult construction control technical problems of a giant twisted, eccentric, and flexible structure under multi-field coupling effects.

In the construction of super-high curved concrete structures: an integral steel platform formwork equipment with combined support was innovatively developed, using structural stiffening columns as guides, supports, and climbing elements for the peripheral steel columns and the central inner-tube outer-frame. This solved the technical challenge of large-cantilever curved formwork.

Scientific and Technological Innovation Three: Health Monitoring and Control Technology for the Full Life Cycle of Construction and Operation

In integrated structural health monitoring technology: an integrated full-life-cycle health monitoring system for construction and operation was innovatively developed, achieving integrated data sharing and seamless linkage between construction and operation of the high-rise structure.

In structural response characteristic monitoring technology: a complete wind environment monitoring system was developed through research, filling the gap in wind environment data above the boundary layer; monitoring system technology for the dynamic response of super-high structures under strong winds and earthquakes was developed through research, and a health monitoring analysis platform system for super-high-rise buildings based on measured data was constructed. The system has successfully recorded and evaluated monitoring data from more than twenty earthquakes and more than ten strong typhoons. It has become an international model for integrated health monitoring of super-high-rise buildings.
