On May 31, 2016, the island-tunnel project successfully completed the foundation tamping construction for the tunnel at the island-tunnel junction of the East Artificial Island. At this point, all 5 construction tasks of the special competition for the tunnel foundation and protective structure at the island-tunnel junction of the East Artificial Island have been completed, which means that the east head of the East Artificial Island is ready for construction and is waiting for the E33 immersed tube to connect with the buried section.
　　2016 is the "decisive year" for the island-tunnel project. The construction at the island-tunnel junction of the East Artificial Island is a very important node on the critical path of the immersed tube installation construction of the island-tunnel project in 2016. The construction water area has complex flow conditions, narrow operation scope, and frequent cross operations. In order to ensure that the construction of the tunnel foundation and protective structure in the island head area is completed before the typhoon season, reduce the risk of typhoon damage to the steel sealing door, buttress structure, laid gravel foundation, and foundation trench slope at the east head of the East Artificial Island, and create more operation space and construction conditions for the subsequent processes before the installation of the E33 tube section and the smooth implementation of the island engineering as planned, the island-tunnel project department decided to carry out this special meritorious competition to further stimulate the work enthusiasm of all participating employees and set off a "40-day intensive work" upsurge in the construction of the east head of the East Artificial Island.
　　After 40 days of hard work, the work area completed 5 construction tasks on time with quality and quantity guaranteed: the demolition of 3 steel cylinders and 8 auxiliary cells at the east head of the East Artificial Island, the installation of 500 steel caps on the top of the steel cylinders and auxiliary cells, the tamping of 59.5m foundation trench with two-piece stone riprap, the riprap for the slope and wave-block foundation, and the prefabrication of 7 wave blocks and the installation of 28 wave blocks.
　　During this period, under the overall arrangement of the project headquarters, the work area continuously strengthened the connection and coordination between various process constructions, strictly advanced the construction of each module at the island-tunnel junction according to the construction plan; continuously strengthened the control of the construction process, strictly controlled the construction quality with high standards and high requirements, and ensured the safety of the construction site; and gave play to the enthusiasm and creativity of all employees, ensuring the smooth completion of the tunnel foundation and protective structure at the island-tunnel junction.
