After over 850 hours of all-out rescue efforts, the surface large-diameter drilling rescue at the Yurong Gypsum Mine "12•25" collapse accident in Pingyi County, Linyi City, Shandong Province, which drew national attention, was successful. At 22:48 on January 29, 2016, four survivors trapped underground for 36 days were successfully rescued, creating the first successful case of surface drilling rescue in China's mine rescue history.
The gypsum mine collapse was triggered by the collapse of an adjacent abandoned gypsum mine goaf. It is understood that in response to the broken underground rock strata and complex hydrological conditions of this rescue, the State Administration of Work Safety and the Shandong Provincial Government successively mobilized 6 drilling rigs and 4 drilling teams from across the country. Among them, 3 Bauer drilling rigs participated throughout, playing a crucial role.
Century-Old German Precision: Rushing to the Rescue Site at the First Opportunity
Founded in 1790, the German Bauer Group is one of the world's most renowned professional foundation engineering contractors and equipment manufacturers, with a history of over 200 years. Bauer has been doing business in China for more than 20 years, with users all over the country. According to 2015 statistics, Bauer Maschinen GmbH ranked 35th among the world's top 50 construction machinery companies, the only specialized foundation engineering equipment manufacturer to make the top 50.
On the morning of December 26, 2015, after receiving a notice from the National Work Safety Rescue Command Center, 4 Bauer employees quickly rushed to the rescue site in Pingyi, Shandong, to provide technical support for the Bauer RB-T 90 truck-mounted rescue drilling rig of the National Mine Huainan Rescue Team.
China and Germany United, United as One: Fighting on the Rescue Frontline
On December 28, two German Bauer experts received a notice from the command center, gave up their Christmas holidays, and rushed from Germany to the site to join the rescue work. On January 1, Bauer sent another 5 technical personnel, who, together with the BG 38 rotary drilling rig, rushed to the site to start drilling construction of the No. 5 large-diameter rescue shaft. Several Bauer technicians operated the BG 38 rig around the clock and successfully completed the first-stage drilling of 1.25 meters in diameter; on January 6, the Bauer BG 26 rotary drilling rig arrived at the site to assist China Coal Dadi Company in the construction of another large-diameter borehole. From then on, 3 Bauer rigs fought together on the rescue frontline.

The entire rescue process was fraught with difficulties: "the 711mm large-diameter down-the-hole hammer could not operate normally in clay strata," "the BG 38 rotary drilling rig penetrated 4 layers of karst caves to complete a 54-meter-deep, 1.25-meter-diameter borehole, and finally lowered an 800mm-diameter casing to a depth of 54 meters," "the Bauer RB-T 90 rig used the 711mm down-the-hole hammer reverse circulation method for drilling," "a stuck-drill accident at 169 meters was resolved"......
Bauer's German technical personnel consulted with experts from the command center and used various construction schemes to overcome one technical difficulty after another. A total of 20 Bauer employees, including 4 German engineers, participated in the rescue, with several Bauer employees staying at the site for 36 days, finally welcoming the ultimate success.
On the evening of January 28, the 493mm inner-diameter rescue casing encountered an obstacle when lowered to about 10 meters from the tunnel. After reaming, the 216-meter-deep rescue channel was finally opened at 4 p.m. on January 29, 2016, and all four miners were rescued that evening.
In this rescue, the Bauer RB-T 90 truck-mounted drilling rig, Bauer BG 38 rotary drilling rig, and Bauer BG 26 rotary drilling rig performed excellently, playing a key role in large-diameter drilling construction in complex strata. The rescue of the "12•25" collapse accident at the Yurong Gypsum Mine in Pingyi County, Linyi City, Shandong Province, is a milestone in China's mine rescue history. The successful rescue of trapped miners using large-diameter drilling technology is the first case in China and only the third in the world, creating a miracle in China's mine rescue history!
