It is reported that the line starts from Emei Station, passes through Yangang, Shawan District of Leshan City, Ebian, Jinkouhe, enters Ganluo, Yuexi, Xide, Mianning in Liangshan Prefecture to Xichang, then via Dechang to Miyi County of Panzhihua City, and connects with the capacity expansion project of the Chengdu-Kunming Railway from Miyi to Panzhihua. To the north, the line connects to the Chengdu hub via the Chengdu-Emei section of the Chengdu-Kunming Railway, and links with the Baoji-Chengdu, Chengdu-Suining-Chongqing railways, as well as the under-construction northern section of the Chengdu-Mianyang-Leshan intercity railway, Chengdu-Lanzhou railway, Xi'an-Chengdu passenger dedicated line, Chengdu-Chongqing passenger dedicated line, and the planned Sichuan-Qinghai, Sichuan-Tibet railways, leading to western Sichuan, northwestern regions, and parts of North China, Northeast China, and East China; at the southern end, it intersects with the planned Zhaotong-Panzhihua-Lijiang railway in the Panzhihua area, providing access to Lijiang and northeastern Yunnan and northwestern Guizhou, and connects southward to the Kunming hub, reaching Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, and the Pearl River Delta region. It is an important component of the skeleton road network in Southwest China.
　　The construction length of this project is 386.29 km (including the 14.25 km early-started section from Yuexi to Anluo, which commenced construction in December 2014), and the total length of connecting lines such as Yangang, Mianning, and Huangshuitang is 9.215 km. The entire line has 80.817 km of bridges (141 bridges) and 211.42 km of tunnels (52 tunnels), with a bridge-tunnel ratio of 75.6%, and 18 stations.
