Recently, in the vast Gobi wilderness of Sindh Province, 80 kilometers from Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, Three Gorges Corporation's Pakistan Wind Power Phase II project has broken ground, with an installed capacity of 99 MW. Once completed, it will provide electricity to 500,000 local households.
Pakistan Wind Power Phase II is the second wind power project invested and built by Three Gorges Corporation in Pakistan, and another milestone in realizing its “rolling development” investment concept in Pakistan's wind power market following the successful construction of Pakistan Wind Power Phase I. Pakistan Wind Power Phase II has been listed by the governments of China and Pakistan as one of the “actively promoted projects” of the “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.” With double the installed capacity of Phase I, Pakistan Wind Power Phase II has an installed capacity of 99 MW, a total investment of approximately US$230 million, and an annual power generation of about 300 million kWh. It is expected to be connected to the grid in 2017. Pakistan Wind Power Phase I provides electricity to more than 200,000 local households, while Phase II will provide electricity to 500,000 local households, bringing the total to 700,000 local households. During construction, Pakistan Wind Power Phase II will provide more than 800 direct local jobs.
