On the morning of January 8, all 60 pile foundations of the main pier of the Liyanggang Bridge—a key project of the Sanmen Bay Bridge—were completed, marking the start of the critical substructure construction phase for the Sanmen Bay Bridge and connecting line project.

The Sanmen Bay Bridge and connecting line project is an important component of the Zhejiang Coastal Expressway and also an important component of the duplicate line of the Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Expressway. The project is about 55 kilometers long. To the north, it can connect via the Xiangshan Port Bridge to the Hangzhou Bay Bridge and directly to Shanghai; to the south, it links Taizhou and Wenzhou. The Ningbo section is about 48 kilometers long, with a total investment of about 12.6 billion yuan (about 10 billion yuan invested within Ningbo).

The Sanmen Bay Bridge is mainly formed by three bridges, including the Liyanggang Bridge, the Qingshangang Bridge, and the Shepan Waterway Bridge. The first two are being built by Ningbo, and the latter by Taizhou. At present, the Ningbo section of the project has carried out subgrade excavation, substructure, bridge pile foundation, tunnel excavation, lining, and other works, with cumulative investment in the Ningbo section reaching 2.325 billion yuan. The Liyanggang Bridge has fully completed the construction of the main pier pile foundations, making it the fastest-progressing of the three major bridges; it is also an extra-large bridge in the second Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou corridor. The project is designed for a speed of 100 kilometers per hour and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2018. Once completed, it will greatly ease the current traffic pressure on the Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Expressway and improve the port's collection and distribution capacity.
