事故发生后，资阳市、雁江区立即成立了事故处置指挥部，对现场进行施救，同时展开事故原因调查。
沱江三桥由四川川交路桥有限责任公司承建，事故是在拆除沱江东岸施工用索塔时发生倒塌。
沱江三桥西起莲花街道办事处城北沱江新城，东岸与迎宾大道相接。主桥长300米、宽36.5米，设双向六车道，总投资约2亿元，预计8月底通车。
