To support the construction of the Financial City startup area, the section of Linjiang Avenue from Keyun Road to Chebei Road will be renovated, with adjustments to its alignment and the construction of a tunnel over 1 kilometer long. The total project investment exceeds 700 million yuan. After the renovation is completed, passing vehicles will all travel through the underground tunnel or enter the Financial City, creating a system that separates pedestrians and vehicles. The project began its environmental impact assessment public notice yesterday.

A dedicated electric vehicle lane will be provided

The section of Linjiang Avenue from Keyun Road to Chebei Road has already been completed and opened to traffic. The external traffic connection nodes for this section are only Keyun Road and Chebei Road at the west and east ends, and external traffic distribution nodes are relatively lacking. The renovation plans to adjust the alignment of this section and add a tunnel to connect with the complex underground works of the Financial City.

To improve the infrastructure supporting the construction of the Guangzhou International Financial City startup area, the Guangzhou Municipal Key Public Construction Project Management Office plans to convert the section of Linjiang Avenue between Keyun Road and Chebei Road into an urban arterial road combining ground-level roads and an underground tunnel, as well as motor vehicle lanes and electric vehicle lanes. Among these, the ground-level road is about 1,377.47 meters long and includes two bridges crossing rivers and streams; the main tunnel line is about 1,175 meters long, of which the side roads on both sides total about 1,257 meters and the ramps total about 597 meters.

It is reported that the western section of the ground-level road from Keyun Road to Wanrong Road and the eastern section from Lurong Road to Chebei Road are motor vehicle travel sections. The middle section from Wanrong Road to Lurong Road is an electric vehicle travel section and emergency lane where motor vehicles are prohibited, with a red line width of 21 to 40 meters. This project will only implement the civil engineering portion of the electric vehicle travel section, while facilities such as tram tracks are planned to be implemented under a separate project. It is worth noting that the so-called electric vehicle is a new type of internal transportation in the Financial City, mainly intended to solve internal connection issues.

The tunnel adopts a main and side road design

According to the "Guangzhou International Financial City Startup Area Urban Design and Regulatory Detailed Planning - Comprehensive Transportation Special Planning," the transportation planning strategy of the Financial City is "slow life inside the city, green public transport on the ground, and a fast pace underground." The area is planned to have a "four horizontal and four vertical" skeleton road network system, in which the "four horizontal" roads are Zhongshan Avenue, Huangpu Avenue, Huacheng Avenue, and Linjiang Avenue, and the "four vertical" roads are Huanan Expressway, Keyun Road, Chebei Road, and East Ring Expressway.

Linjiang Avenue is one of the major traffic arteries among the "four horizontal" roads of the Financial City. After the renovation is completed, passing vehicles will all travel through the underground tunnel or enter the Financial City, creating a system that separates pedestrians and vehicles. The entire underground tunnel is a motor vehicle travel section. Its western end connects with the planned Phase II tunnel of the Financial City. There will be no main line entrance or exit at the western end; only a pair of parallel ramp entrances and exits (L1, L2) will be provided to connect to the ground-level road. After passing eastward beneath Keyun Road, Wanrong Road, Tangxia Stream, and Lurong Road, the tunnel will have a main line east entrance and exit on the west side of Zaozhichang Stream. The tunnel is designed in a form separating main and side roads, with eight lanes in both directions, and four lanes in both directions on the main line. The side roads have two lanes in one direction and are located on both sides of the main line. It is reported that the ground-level section from Wanrong Road to Lurong Road is an electric vehicle lane and emergency lane where motor vehicles are prohibited. The lanes in this area create a humanized slow-traffic environment, closely integrated with roadside greening and natural landscapes, optimizing the travel environment and fully reflecting the quality of Lingnan-style slow life.

  Expert analysis

What is the purpose of renovating Linjiang Avenue?

Transportation experts said that the developing Financial City startup area is an area where municipal transportation roads are relatively weak. The renovation of Linjiang Avenue will help strengthen local roads in the Financial City, improve the accessibility of the local transportation system, and enhance the urban traffic microcirculation system.

By building an underground tunnel and improving and optimizing the above-ground alignment on the basis of the original Linjiang Avenue, after construction is completed, the section of Linjiang Avenue from Keyun Road to Chebei Road will become an urban arterial road combining ground-level roads and an underground tunnel, as well as motor vehicle lanes and electric vehicle lanes. At the same time, the bus system along the route will be rationally planned to increase the proportion of green travel and convenient travel and ensure the fair distribution of travel resources in the local area.
