To open up key corridors for transporting Inner Mongolia's coal resources outward and for China-Europe freight as early as possible, railway construction in Inner Mongolia is continuously accelerating, compressing the originally three-year construction period of the Ejina–Hami (Xinjiang) railway to one and a half years, with the entire line scheduled to open to traffic by the end of this year.

The Hohhot Railway Bureau has firmly seized the major opportunities brought by the national "Belt and Road" initiative and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei coordinated development strategy, completing capital construction investment of 26.9 billion yuan in 2014, the highest in 50 years. This year, 1,322 kilometers of railway are planned for completion, accounting for one-sixth of the country's newly built railway mileage opened to traffic. At the same time, Inner Mongolia's first newly built high-speed railway—the Zhangjiakou–Hohhot passenger dedicated line—has started construction along its entire length. It will connect with the planned Beijing–Zhangjiakou passenger dedicated line, accelerating integration into the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei coordinated development strategy.
