According to reports, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, hailed as a flagship connectivity project, will span 3,000 kilometers with an investment of $45 billion.
An official from Pakistan's Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform disclosed the overall construction overview of the corridor to Nikkei. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor stretches approximately 3,000 kilometers from Gwadar Port in Pakistan to Kashgar in China's Xinjiang. The total project cost reaches $45 billion, with completion planned for 2030. The governments of China and Pakistan are promoting the "China-Pakistan Economic Corridor" concept. The corridor extends 3,000 kilometers from northwestern China to Gwadar Port in southwestern Pakistan. The two countries will build transportation and power infrastructure along the route, with an estimated total project cost of $45 billion.
Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif visited Beijing in November and held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, during which he expressed expectations for strengthening bilateral relations, saying the "economic corridor" will serve as a "catalyst" for promoting China-Pakistan economic cooperation. China and Pakistan also signed about 20 cooperation documents related to infrastructure construction. Among them, the first phase will develop Gwadar Port on the Arabian Sea coast by 2017 and build an international airport. Chinese companies are expected to participate in the construction. At the same time, the Karakoram Highway leading to China will be widened, and the railway network from Karachi in the south to Lahore in the east and Peshawar in the north will be improved. In addition, there are plans to lay fiber-optic cables between China and Pakistan.
