Deep Foundation Pit Excavation for Metro is Dangerous: Workers Must 'Scan Face' to Enter and Exit the Site

The reporter learned from the Changzhou Rail Transit Construction Command that the two initial sections of Metro Line 1 selected for early construction are two sections with less impact on traffic and better construction conditions—the north section includes Xinqiao Station and Nenjiang Road Station and two underground intervals; the south section includes Daxuechengnan Station, Longyue Road Station and two underground intervals, about 5 kilometers, and the civil engineering is expected to be completed in 2017.

Changzhou Metro Pile Extraction Project Construction Site

The construction of the Xinbei initial section is undertaken by China Railway Fourth Bureau, a large-scale benchmark enterprise in China with strong strength and rich experience in metro construction. At the construction site of Nenjiang Road Station in Xinbei District, Changzhou, the reporter saw that this is the earliest station of Metro Line 1 to undergo large-scale excavation. On site, there are special trench wall machines for excavating underground continuous walls, and 80-ton and 150-ton large cranes have entered the site. The construction area has been fully enclosed, and the excavation area and various work sheds are clearly divided. The surface attachments have been basically cleared, and the traffic diversion roads have also been rerouted.

Xinqiao Station and Nenjiang Road Station are both two-story island stations

Nenjiang Road Station is located at the intersection of the planned Leshan Road and Nenjiang Road, arranged in a north-south direction along Leshan Road across Nenjiang Road. It is an underground two-story island platform station with a length of 468 meters, 9 entrances and exits, and a total construction area of 26,400 square meters. Xinqiao Station is located at the intersection of the planned Leshan Road and Xinqiao Street, arranged in a north-south direction along Leshan Road across Xinqiao Street. It is also an underground two-story island station with 4 entrances and exits and a total construction area of 11,362 square meters. The open-cut method will be used for construction. First, the underground continuous wall enclosure structure will be built, then the earth and rock will be excavated from top to bottom to the design elevation, and then the main structure of the station will be constructed from the base upward. Finally, the top slab will be backfilled and the ground restored. After the construction of the two stations is completed, the shield method will be used for the interval construction. From the main construction of the station to the tunnel interval construction, it will take about more than a year.

At the construction site, workers can only enter after 'face scanning'

It is understood that the main construction period of the two initial section stations is about 1 year, and each station will have more than 500 construction workers working simultaneously at peak times. Metro construction is a deep foundation pit excavation project, which is a relatively large hazard source. For this reason, Changzhou Metro Line 1 uses the 'facial recognition' system developed by the city's construction department for the first time at the construction site. After all construction workers undergo safety education and technical disclosure, their information is entered into the system, and thereafter they must 'scan their faces' every time they enter or leave the site. Yesterday, at the construction site of Nenjiang Road Station, the reporter saw that the monitoring system at the entrance and exit of the site had started working. When construction workers enter and exit, the system will automatically recognize them and then display their information on the electronic screen. If there is no data for the person in the information database, the gate will not open. The on-site person in charge, Hou Yafeng, introduced that this system is more advanced than the previous card punching or fingerprint systems. In addition to recognizing faces, it can also identify the body temperature of passing personnel. The use of this type of system in national metro construction is still the first of its kind.

Enclosed construction to control dust and noise
At yesterday's construction site, the reporter also noticed that the construction site had been enclosed with barriers, some roads inside the site had been hardened, green plants had been planted, and spray devices had been installed at the entrance and exit of the site. The person in charge of the site introduced: 'The construction site will use low-noise machinery and construction methods. Under the conditions of meeting the soil construction requirements, low-noise equipment will be selected as much as possible. Especially at construction sites close to factories, effective sound-absorbing and sound-insulating materials will be used for main noise sources to build enclosed sound insulation or sound barriers, so as to reduce the interference to residents to the specified standard and minimize the impact of construction on the lives of surrounding residents. The project construction may disturb the strata, causing building deformation or subsidence. For nearby buildings, detailed surveys and records will be made in advance, and preventive measures such as reinforcement will be taken for possible hazards. For work surfaces and loading, unloading, and transportation processes that are prone to dust and flying dust, operating procedures and watering and dust reduction systems will be formulated. In dry seasons and windy weather, appropriate watering will be done to maintain humidity. It is strictly prohibited to burn any waste and substances that produce toxic and harmful gases, smoke, dust, or odors at the construction site. Equipment with closed and fume treatment devices should be used for toxic and harmful substances such as molten asphalt. Fine particulate bulk materials such as cement that are easy to fly should be stored in warehouses as much as possible. Soil piles and open-air storage yards for bulk materials should be compacted and covered.

Traffic diversion currently has little impact on travel

In order to minimize the impact of rail transit construction on urban traffic and residents' lives, a batch of traffic diversion projects closely related to rail transit have been implemented. Road diversion projects such as Taoyuan Road, Xintang North Road, Hongmei South Road, and Lihua Road have been organized and implemented, making full use of existing road resources, rationally designing detour routes, and improving the traffic carrying capacity of the road network. The construction of the two initial sections in the north and south currently has little impact on traffic. The two stations in Xinbei District are surrounded by farmland, and the traffic volume on the roads is not large, so the impact of metro construction on traffic is relatively small. However, by April next year, the full-scale construction of the metro will bring great pressure on urban traffic, especially during peak hours. At that time, under the premise of not interrupting traffic and public transportation as much as possible, the impact of rail transit construction on urban traffic will be minimized.
