The integration of engineering machinery with IoT technology will open up new approaches to energy saving and consumption reduction. Information technology is accelerating its penetration into the engineering machinery field and developing in greater depth, leading engineering machinery toward intelligence, integration, and energy efficiency—one of the main directions of the industry's next round of product competition.
It is reported that engineering machinery engines maintain high-speed idling most of the time, while operating at maximum speed only accounts for 5% to 8% of total working time. In addition, there is a lack of effective fuel-saving solutions for air conditioning systems and other applications, leaving huge room for energy savings.
On a construction site thousands of miles away, when engineering machinery equipment breaks down, various fault information data can be transmitted in a timely manner to the manufacturer's system control room, and experts then send solutions back to the site, ultimately resolving the problem. Recently, the author learned from the engineering machinery industry that a wheeled forklift loader newly developed by an engineering machinery enterprise has been integrated with IoT technology, enabling functions such as online fault diagnosis and monitoring of the machine's operating conditions.
  Remote diagnosis of machine faults
The forklift loader using IoT technology can perform online fault diagnosis of the entire machine. By transmitting data such as water temperature, oil temperature, oil pressure, and voltage, and through visual and auditory comparison, it monitors the machine's operating conditions in real time, promptly grasps the machine's working performance, effectively troubleshoots faults, and provides service maintenance and operational safety reminders.
It is understood that through the IoT platform, on-site staff use handheld terminals to detect the machine's operating status online, converting information such as sound information, construction site images, and machine operating conditions into data and transmitting it to the machine manufacturer. Even from thousands of miles away, experts can have a clear understanding of the machine's on-site working conditions. Once a machine fault occurs, they can diagnose the problem immediately and guide on-site technicians to complete troubleshooting and resolution.
In addition, the IoT expert system periodically distributes training materials such as maintenance instruction texts and audio-visual materials to provide maintenance training for on-site staff.
Enabling energy saving and consumption reduction
“Today, engineering machinery enterprises are paying increasing attention to integration with IoT technology.” Dai Fuquan, Director of the E-commerce Division at China Construction Machinery Business Network, told the author that at present, most engineering machinery applications of IoT mainly remain at installing GPS to achieve machine positioning functions, and broadening the application of IoT functions will be a development trend for engineering machinery.
