RMJM has won the competition to design a landmark tower in Doumen District, Zhuhai, China. The 93-meter observation tower features a curtain wall facade with a scale-like skin.
The design of the observation tower is inspired by Doumen's distinctive water culture, using the posture of a leaping fish to symbolize Doumen's prosperity and vigorous development prospects. At the same time, the observation tower adopts an axisymmetric design approach to meet multi-angle and all-round viewing needs. This project uses parametric design technology; to facilitate construction, the structural system is logically processed. The tower's main structure is formed by rotating 12 two-dimensional curves, on which secondary structures are generated as a grid shell for the skin units, in a centrally symmetric form. The project is located at the confluence of two rivers in Zhuhai, inspired by the forms of water movement and the coastal city's waterfront lifestyle, and is called "China's Riviera."
