The Binzhou Railway Bridge, spanning the Harbin section of the Songhua River, was built in 1900 and completed in 1901. It is the most important bridge on the Middle East Railway and is now 114 years old. Couples in love like to walk on the century-old bridge, hang a pair of love locks on it, leave a vow of love, and pray that their love can last a hundred years like this bridge. However, recently, citizens reported to our newspaper that the love locks that were once densely packed on the Binzhou Railway Bridge are now fewer and fewer. Who cut the love locks?

Once tens of thousands of love locks, now only a few hundred remain

"In the past, many love locks were hung on the wire mesh of the bridge, but now only a few are left, lonely." Li Degui, a citizen of Harbin, lives in Songbei and works in Daoli District. The Binzhou Railway Bridge is his necessary route to and from work. He said that there were at least more than 10,000 love locks hanging on the bridge, densely packed. However, recently he found that the strings of love locks hanging on both sides of the bridge have indeed decreased a lot, and occasionally a few small locks or locks hanging on the inner side of the railway look lonely.

At around 10 o'clock on the 10th, on the Binzhou Railway Bridge, it was found that there are now only more than 200 love locks left on the Binzhou Railway Bridge from the Daoli direction to the Songbei direction. During the interview, some citizens said that twenty years ago, love locks began to appear on the railway bridge, and they have been increasing over time. Strings of love locks engraved with love vows have gradually become a unique scenery. Some people have counted that the total number of love locks exceeds 10,000. Previously, Harbin relevant departments, considering safety and aesthetics, had always been controversial about whether to keep the love locks on the railway bridge. But the love locks have survived through wind and rain. "The love locks are gradually disappearing, and I feel a faint sense of loss in my heart," said citizen Ms. Sun.

      Relevant departments:

To make the bridge stronger, the love locks were cut off

Where did the love locks on the Binzhou Railway Bridge go? Harbin citizens hope the relevant departments will investigate.

According to the Harbin railway department, every year the railway department carries out maintenance work such as painting anti-corrosion paint, reinforcement, and repair on the railway bridge. Especially last year, after the bridge was listed as a national cultural relic protection unit, considering the load of the love locks on the bridge, this year the railway department cut off the love locks hanging on the bridge in order to make the bridge stronger. According to Jia Yingzhe, deputy director of the Harbin Cultural Relics Management Station, with the Songhua River Grand Bridge of the Harbin-Qiqihar Passenger Dedicated Line being put into use within the year, the Binzhou Railway Bridge will become a landscape of Harbin as a national cultural relic. Cultural relic protection departments, property rights departments, and ordinary citizens all have the responsibility and obligation to protect cultural relics. According to the "Cultural Relics Protection Law," anyone who scratches, paints, or hangs miscellaneous items on cultural relics, if the damage is not serious, shall be warned and fined by the public security organ or the unit where the cultural relic is located. In this regard, the Harbin Cultural Relics Management Station stated that citizens should consciously protect cultural relics.
