In 2013, the global concrete market was turbulent, and the world's concrete giants have successively released their 2013 performance reports. Judging from the results, some were happy and some were worried. According to statistics from China Concrete Network, the 2013 ranking of the world's top ten concrete companies changed somewhat compared with the previous year.
Mexico's Cemex Group, one of the world's largest building materials and cement producers, still ranked first in this selection. The group's concrete sales volume in 2013 was 58.3 million cubic meters, up 6% year on year. The increase in sales was due to higher transaction volumes in the United States, the Mediterranean region, Asia, South America, Central America and the Caribbean, as well as the company's raising product prices in most of its business regions.
Switzerland's Holcim Group has followed Cemex in second place in recent years, but in 2013 the group's concrete sales fell to 39.5 million cubic meters, down 15.78% year on year, and it was overtaken by Germany's Heidelberg Cement, ranking third this time. In April this year, the merger plan between Holcim Group and France's Lafarge Group was officially announced. The merger of the two companies will create a new company with a market value of about US$55 billion. This merger is a takeover of Lafarge Group by Holcim Group and is also the largest merger and acquisition in the industry's history.
Heidelberg Cement, ranked second this time, achieved concrete sales of 40.3 million cubic meters in 2013, up 2.81% year on year. 2013 was Heidelberg Cement's best performance since the financial crisis. The improvement was mainly due to higher market prices, reduced financial costs and lower non-recurring expenses.
The companies ranked 4th to 7th did not change compared with 2012, but their concrete sales all declined in 2013, and the future situation is not optimistic. France's Vicat Group, ranked 8th, rose one place compared with 2012. The group's concrete sales reached 10.7 million cubic meters in 2013, up 35% year on year. Brazil's Votorantim Group and Portugal's Cimpor Cement, ranked 9th and 10th, saw their concrete sales increase by 29.35% and 50.77% respectively in 2013, with good operating conditions. In particular, Portugal's Cimpor Cement had concrete sales of 4.9 million cubic meters in 2013, a sharp year-on-year increase, which also helped the company enter the ranks of the world's top ten concrete companies.
From the perspective of the regions to which the listed companies belong, 7 companies are from Europe. With industry-leading professional technology and complete building solutions, European concrete companies remain leaders in the world's building materials industry. In recent years, European concrete companies have continuously accelerated the pace of global mergers and acquisitions, especially increasing investment in emerging markets such as the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific, and have occupied a dominant position in fierce market competition.
This selection was conducted by China Concrete Network mainly based on the actual output of major multinational companies to determine the 2013 ranking of the world's top ten concrete companies (excluding Chinese companies). The selection time was limited, so omissions are unavoidable. If there are any discrepancies in the data, please contact us!
