Since 2004, the BIM (Building Information Modeling) Research Center team where Yu Jie works at the China Architecture Design & Research Group (hereinafter referred to as the China Institute) has been through nearly ten years. During these ten years, there was hesitation and confusion, but more importantly perseverance. In the end, hard work paid off: "We believe we have found our direction," Yu Jie said.
At first, when BIM was just introduced into China, both in terms of hardware and software, this "swallow before the hall of the Wang and Xie families" did not adapt well to local conditions. With the development of technology and the R&D practice of professionals in various fields, "In 2012 we felt this technology was feasible, and it could be implemented, only that implementation would take a process. In 2013, we gradually solidified mature technologies, standardized our BIM design workflow, and at the same time expanded the group of engineers and architects at the China Institute who had mastered BIM technology. Through various practices, we found that in the application of BIM, BIM management and BIM collaboration are actually more important than technology." The result of all the efforts of Yu Jie and others is that something close to a luxury item has gradually entered "ordinary homes."
Handling large projects with ease
The first characteristic of urban complex projects is that they are large. Of course, for large projects, the owner naturally demands high-quality buildings. According to Yu Jie, in the design of urban complex projects, how to connect the many participants together and find a reasonable management method so that the project can proceed smoothly is an important issue.
Yu Jie also emphasized: "With so many designers on one platform, being able to complete the design according to the owner's schedule is a very complex process. This includes municipal interfaces. At the same time, in complex spaces, how can mechanical and electrical engineers make the best use of space, achieve three-dimensional design, and make all mechanical and electrical systems rational and space-saving? So what did we feel in the project? The cost of project-level BIM design management and BIM technology application is relatively high. In our implementation process, do you need to spend so much cost on this to obtain the optimal design? This issue is actually very important."
In fact, project-level BIM management is a core competitiveness for future enterprise development. The entire process includes BIM project deployment, BIM organizational management and implementation, and how to properly treat inspection results, ultimately optimizing them into enterprise project-level organizational management. From the deployment process, everyone can see that there is team division of labor, identification and optimization of workflows, and what all contents at each stage include and to what depth. These are all key issues. In short, establishing enterprise-level project-level process management is a very key way to achieve high-quality and efficient projects.
Improving small projects with constant refinement
For some small projects, Yu Jie believes that collaboration creates value. Why? Yu Jie gave this answer: "Previously, everyone said BIM was too troublesome and too slow. For owners, if they want to shorten the development cycle, improve design quality, and achieve accurate quantity calculation, they must try new BIM modeling methods and find new sources of BIM value."
After many attempts, Yu Jie feels that collaboration is the key technology of BIM. "In some projects, we practiced a new collaboration method. Previously, each discipline had its own model. So, is one model per discipline collaboration? I don't think it completely is. Then we linked them together to make them collaborate. Is that truly collaboration? Not completely either. Why? The copy gap is interrupted, so we cannot get accurate feedback of information. Also, we put different models together, then go to another software to find clashes, and after finding clash points, go back. Is such a process truly collaboration? Not completely either. Real-time collaboration among multiple disciplines and in 3D is the key technology. So how exactly should it be done? First, the architectural discipline and the structural discipline should be combined in one file. Here some information is shared, and at the same time, the information in all files itself is unique. This ensures the accuracy of information files, avoids duplication, avoids drawing comparison, and is also conducive to calculating quantities." Yu Jie emphasized, "Finally, we used a 3D approach to make the interior clear as well, creating conditions for the owner during the decoration process and finding a reasonable value point between beauty and economy. For the owner's efficiency and cost, this is very beneficial."
Of course, collaboration is the core of a team. Using new collaboration methods can improve the team's awareness, professional level, and collaboration ability. It can also release productivity, achieve real simulation, and become more professional. At the same time, in this process, repetitive work can be reduced, the professional work scope can be expanded, and rapid batch processing can be achieved. The final product obtained will definitely be high quality.
The ecological value chain of new products
BIM 2.0 is a new product explored by the entire China Institute team. Its main central idea is to make BIM efficient and reduce costs. Find time value, quality value, and team value in BIM. Costs can be calculated accurately and the design process reduced. Yu Jie also said: "Actually, in the BIM 1.0 process, the technology was feasible, and the technology had interfaces and could be expanded. We found some node values and could provide them using 3D means. In the BIM 2.0 process, the focus is called collaboration and management, so the value of the entire ecological chain can be found. The ultimate goal is still promotion. The ultimate purpose is to improve efficiency and reduce costs."
Indeed, collaboration is actually a very key element in BIM implementation. Being able to find a collaboration method suitable for similar projects in one's own enterprise is a very key element in practicing BIM. In some cases, Yu Jie has been trying to find new collaboration methods that can allow virtualization and the team to be implemented in design, improve efficiency, and reduce costs for both the owner and the designer. At the same time, BIM also helps improve the degree of enterprise informatization. Enterprise informatization is divided into management informatization and technical informatization. In implementation, BIM technology is the process by which the construction industry generates information and manages information. Of course, collaborative management of this information in a project is very important. These are exactly the directions of Yu Jie's unremitting efforts now and in the future.
