On January 10, the 2013 National Science and Technology Awards Conference was held at the Great Hall of the People. Party and state leaders Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, Liu Yunshan and Zhang Gaoli attended the conference and presented awards to the winning representatives. Sany Heavy Industry, a leading enterprise in the construction machinery industry, won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award for its “Key Technologies and Applications of Large-Tonnage Series Crawler Cranes.”  Public records show that this is the third time Sany Heavy Industry has won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. In 2005 and 2010, Sany Heavy Industry won the award twice for “Research, Development and Application of Key Technologies for Concrete Pumping” and “Construction of a Technological Innovation Platform for Construction Machinery.” In addition, in 2012 Sany Heavy Industry’s ultra-long boom technology also won the second prize of the National Technological Invention Award.

It is understood that Sany entered the crawler crane field in 2003, when foreign brands monopolized China’s construction machinery market and all large-tonnage crawler cranes relied on imports. In such an environment, Sany resolutely raised the banner of revitalizing the national industry. Before Sany entered the industry, the largest domestic crawler crane tonnage was only 150 tons. Sany was the first to successively roll out 400-ton, 600-ton, 900-ton and 1,600-ton products.

In October 2010, the SCC4000 crawler crane, once known as “China’s No. 1 Crane,” was selected to participate in the rescue operation at the Chilean mine disaster and successfully completed the task, interpreting a brand-new meaning of “Made in China” to the world.

In June 2011, Sany’s 3,600-ton crawler crane, known as the “World’s No. 1 Crane,” rolled off the production line, setting a new world record. The product was independently developed by Sany Heavy Industry and adopted advanced design methods such as the limit state design method, digital prototypes and Top Down, with 30 invention patents applied for.

In 2012, Sany Heavy Industry alone accounted for 11% of the U.S. crawler crane market, entering the top three. At the same time, Sany’s 1,600-ton crawler crane successfully completed the hoisting of the 267-ton dome of Unit 2’s nuclear island at the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant in Guangdong, achieving the feat of Sany’s thousand-ton-class crawler cranes successfully hoisting a nuclear island dome for the 17th time.

In 2013, Sany Heavy Industry’s SCC36000A 3,600-ton crawler crane officially obtained the Special Equipment Type Test Certificate and the Special Equipment Manufacturing License. The acquisition of the two certificates marked that the SCC36000A has become a certified, globally largest-tonnage crawler crane available for external sales.

Over the past 10 years, Sany Heavy Industry has led the industry’s development and continuously promoted technological progress in domestic crawler cranes. Sany has not only driven the industry forward through its own efforts, but also filled many domestic technological gaps while completing its own product upgrades, changing the world image of “Made in China.”

At present, Sany has broken the monopoly of foreign brands in the crawler crane field. According to data from industry associations, in recent years, as an industry leader, Sany’s crawler crane sales and export volume have consistently remained in the top tier in China.
