To outsiders, Zhan Chunxin and Zoomlion have had smooth sailing all the way, whether in institutional reform or capital operations, almost always hitting the mark. In fact, this is not the case. The construction machinery industry has always been fraught with difficulties, with fierce market competition and unpredictable corporate fortunes. Recalling the difficult moments of the past decade or more, Zhan Chunxin admitted that he had wept twice for Zoomlion.
His first outburst of weeping occurred in 2000 when Zoomlion went public. At that time, Zoomlion failed to pass the first issuance review meeting, facing the danger of losing its listing quota and wasting tens of millions of yuan in listing expenses. Fortunately, it passed on the second attempt. After receiving the news that day, Zhan Chunxin locked himself in a hotel room and cried bitterly.
The second time he wept was the year after the acquisition of CIFA, when Zoomlion, due to tight funds, needed to conduct a private placement, and it had to be completed by the end of that year; otherwise, after the new year's financial report came out, it would face even bigger problems.
“Time was pressing, and everyone was disheartened, feeling it could not be done. I slammed the table and said, all of you go back, I will do it myself. After everyone left the room, I sat there alone and cried.” Zhan Chunxin recalled. Fate once again favored this entrepreneur approaching his sixties and his company. At the final discussion meeting of the review committee in 2009, the private placement request was approved.
What sets Zhan Chunxin apart is that he not only knows how to work hard with his head down, but also understands capital operations. In 2012, Zhan Chunxin detailed Zoomlion's 20-year path of shareholding reform. Over those 20 years, through institutional reform and equity diversification, Zoomlion has repeatedly released enormous energy in domestic and overseas markets.
Zhan Chunxin, who has always stayed far from the spotlight, gives the first impression of being low-key and steady, and he has always been cautious about reform. But this does not hinder his courage and ambition to build a great enterprise. In fact, in the process of capital operations, Zhan Chunxin has always kept in mind the complex reform environment and enormous entrepreneurial risks. He knows well that the road is rugged, and only by revering rules can an enterprise go farther.
