Green Buildings to Unlock Trillion-Yuan Market Opportunities

Recently, Zhang Changfu, vice chairman and secretary-general of the China Iron and Steel Association (hereinafter referred to as "CISA"), told the media at a public forum that China's crude steel output for the full year of 2013 may reach 782 million tons, and next year it may maintain a growth rate of 2% to 3%, reaching 800 million tons.

Zhang Changfu explained that the difficulties and bottlenecks encountered in the development of the steel industry are contradictions accumulated over nearly 30 years of rapid development, and "definitely cannot be resolved through three or five years of regulation." He believes that the mindset of "relying on capacity release and capacity expansion to dilute costs and earn profits to stay ahead of competitors" is "no longer effective." So, for some steel enterprises, with the grim foreign trade situation and the difficulty of traditional steel consumption recovering for the full year or on a large scale, how should they break through in the future?

In response, Shan Yinmu, chairman of Zhejiang Hangxiao Steel Structure Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Hangxiao Steel Structure"), China's first listed steel structure company, told reporters that green buildings may be a direction that enterprises can focus on in the future.

So-called green buildings are buildings that, throughout their entire life cycle, maximize resource conservation (energy saving, land saving, water saving, and material saving), protect the environment and reduce pollution, and provide people with healthy, applicable, and efficient usable spaces.

In January this year, the State Council elevated green buildings to a "national strategy," explicitly proposing that during the "12th Five-Year Plan" period, 1 billion square meters of new green buildings be built, and that by the end of the "12th Five-Year Plan," 20% of urban buildings should meet green building standards. Qiu Baoxing, vice minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, has even publicly estimated that before 2020, China's investment in energy-saving building projects will reach at least 1.5 trillion yuan.

In Shan Yinmu's view, another favorable factor for green buildings at present is the information revealed by the Central Urbanization Conference. The conference proposed incorporating the concept of making people's lives more comfortable, reflected in every detail, and strengthening the construction of building quality management systems. Data show that buildings account for about one-third of total social energy consumption, but projects that have obtained green building labels account for only about 1% of the country's total building area.

"Because of their 'light, fast, good, and economical' characteristics, steel structures have become a major representative of green buildings. The huge market gap facing the future development of green buildings has put forward new requirements for steel structure enterprises. How to adapt to the upcoming rapid development requires steel structure enterprises to make preparations in all aspects," said Shan Yinmu.

Shan Yinmu also believes that the significance of buildings for environmental protection is easily overlooked.

"At present, the concrete commonly used in domestic buildings generates large carbon emissions from the production and manufacturing stage, while also forming a source of dust pollution and greatly consuming the processing capacity of landfills," said Shan Yinmu. "Steel structure buildings, because of the advantages of steel itself, have the characteristic of being recyclable and meet the basic requirements of China's sustainable development regarding green energy conservation. Because of the relatively high degree of industrialization in their production process and relatively less on-site work, steel structure buildings reduce noise pollution and dust pollution from on-site construction. At the same time, they reduce construction waste emissions by about 60% compared with traditional concrete, reducing the damage to the environment during the construction process."
