The 100,000-ton/year methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) project of Maoming Petrochemical has now entered the civil construction phase. As of November 16, all 67 hand-dug piles for the combined pipe rack foundation had been excavated. The pile holes are 1.2 meters in diameter with an average depth of about 10 meters. The project is scheduled to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2014.

As a refining-chemical integration optimization project, Maoming Petrochemical is building a new 100,000-ton/year MTBE unit based on the existing MTBE/butene unit of its chemical division. The unit adopts the proprietary tubular external circulation with catalytic distillation technology independently developed by Sinopec(5.02, 0.09, 1.83%). After the unit is completed and put into operation, Maoming Petrochemical's annual MTBE production capacity will exceed 200,000 tons, becoming a new profit growth point for the company.

The unit involves an investment of about 81.31 million yuan and consists of two sections: MTBE production and C4 dehydrocarbonization. Using surplus butane/butene raffinate and isobutylene-rich C4 as feedstock, the unit produces high value-added products such as MTBE and provides feedstock for the isononyl alcohol unit to be built later.
