Recently, Shanghai Urban Construction Road & Bridge Group adopted a new “hydro-demolition technique” in the comprehensive overhaul and renovation of the Zhuqiao Toll Station on the G15 Expressway, replacing the traditional concrete demolition process. The technique offers advantages such as environmental protection and reduced consumption.

At present, domestic reinforced concrete repair and demolition projects generally use traditional methods such as manual labor, pneumatic picks, electric picks, breaker machines, and cutting. The “hydro-demolition technique” used in the comprehensive overhaul and renovation of the Zhuqiao Toll Station on the G15 Expressway is a fast and effective concrete removal process that uses high-pressure water to penetrate concrete voids and break it apart.

As a fast and effective concrete removal technology, it uses high-pressure water as the power source and does not damage surrounding structures or the embedded reinforcing steel. The high-pressure water jet is mainly concentrated on the voids and fine cracks on the concrete surface.

This technique was applied to concrete demolition at the junction of the new and old bridges. While effectively protecting the reinforcing steel in the structure from being damaged by chiseling, the process produces no dust and is safe and environmentally friendly. The demolished concrete surface can bond better with new materials, and the removed reinforcing steel can be reused, in line with the concept of green construction.
