京张城际铁路起自北京，经沙城、下花园、宣化到张家口，项目建成将推动张家口步入“首都一小时经济圈”。该线路开通后将主要以客运为主，既有的丰沙线则将以货运为主，开行少量客车方便沿线居民出行，老京张线则保留承担地方货运的任务。
