The civil engineering discipline of Chongqing University was first established in 1935. In 1952, during the national adjustment of departments, the Department of Civil Engineering of Chongqing Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture was founded, and in 1954 it was renamed the Department of Civil Engineering of Chongqing Institute of Architectural Engineering. In 2000, the new Chongqing University was established, and the School of Civil Engineering of Chongqing University was formed. The school has always adhered to the motto of "Unity, Progress, Truth-seeking, Innovation" and the educational philosophy of "solid foundation, broad scope, strong ability, high quality". After more than 70 years of hard work and perseverance, it has achieved remarkable results and enjoys a high reputation and academic status at home and abroad. The civil engineering discipline, led by Academicians Zhou Xuhong, Yang Yongbin, Tamura Yukio, and Liu Hanlong, was selected into the list of world-class discipline construction in 2017 and 2022. In the fifth round of discipline evaluation, the civil engineering discipline achieved leapfrog development and ranked among the top echelon.
The school currently has 272 faculty and staff, including 214 full-time teachers, among whom 85 are professors (researchers), 80 are associate professors, and 79 are doctoral supervisors. The teaching team includes 43 person-times of national-level talents such as academicians, and 66 person-times of provincial and ministerial-level talents such as those selected for the "Chongqing Talent" program. There is 1 National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Research Group, 1 National Huang Danian-style Teacher Team, 1 Ministry of Education Changjiang Scholar Innovation Team, 1 Key Field Innovation Team of the Ministry of Science and Technology Innovation Talent Promotion Plan, 1 Chongqing Municipal Innovation Team, and 2 Chongqing Municipal Teaching Teams.
The school currently offers 5 undergraduate programs: Civil Engineering, Building Environment and Energy Engineering, Urban Underground Space Engineering, Surveying and Mapping Engineering, and Intelligent Construction. Civil Engineering, Building Environment and Energy Engineering, and Urban Underground Space Engineering are national first-class specialty construction projects, among which Civil Engineering and Building Environment and Energy Engineering are national characteristic specialties. The school has a postdoctoral mobile station in the first-level discipline of Civil Engineering, a doctoral and master's program in the first-level discipline of Civil Engineering, a professional doctoral program in Civil and Hydraulic Engineering (Energy and Environment, Advanced Manufacturing), and a professional master's program in Civil and Hydraulic Engineering (Architecture and Civil Engineering). The main research areas include high-performance structural systems, bridges and mountainous subgrade and pavement engineering, special geotechnical mechanics and mountainous geotechnical engineering, engineering dynamic disasters and safety prevention and control, intelligent construction and operation and maintenance, and building environment and green construction.
The school currently has more than 3,500 undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students. Since its establishment, the school has trained more than 20,000 graduates at various levels for the country. Among them, the number of graduates in civil engineering ranks first among similar institutions nationwide. Alumni have consistently been characterized by good ideology, high quality, strong ability, great potential, ability to endure hardship, and courage to take responsibility, and they have served the motherland with outstanding performance.
The school has 8 teaching departments and course groups (Department of Structural Engineering, Department of Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering, Department of Road and Bridge Engineering, Department of Engineering Construction, Department of Surveying and Mapping Engineering, Building Mechanics Course Group, and Architectural Graphics Course Group) and 1 experimental center
