College Introduction
The civil engineering discipline was founded in 1914. In 1952, during the nationwide restructuring of higher education institutions, the college incorporated civil engineering faculty from many domestic universities. In 1981, the civil engineering discipline, represented by structural engineering, was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as one of the first batch of doctoral degree granting programs. In 1984, the civil engineering discipline was among the first to establish a postdoctoral research station. In the 2007 national key discipline evaluation, Tongji University's first-level discipline of civil engineering, along with four second-level disciplines—structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, bridge and tunnel engineering, and disaster prevention and mitigation engineering and protective engineering—were rated as national key disciplines, making it the only first-level national key discipline in the country with four second-level key disciplines. In the evaluations by the Ministry of Education's Degree Center in 2009 and 2012, the overall level of the civil engineering discipline ranked first in the country consecutively, and in the 2016 discipline evaluation it received an A+. Since 2017, Tongji University's civil engineering discipline has ranked first in the world in the ARWU (ShanghaiRanking) for four consecutive years, and in 2021 it ranked first in the world in the US News subject rankings.
In 2011, the College of Civil Engineering of Tongji University was selected as one of the 17 pilot colleges of the Ministry of Education, and is the only national pilot college in the field of civil engineering. In 2015, the civil engineering discipline was among the first batch selected for the Shanghai Universities Peak and Plateau Discipline Construction Plan as a Class I peak discipline, and in 2017 it was selected as a national key first-class discipline. The College of Civil Engineering of Tongji University is one of the strongest colleges in teaching and research among similar domestic programs. Currently, the college has five departments: Department of Building Engineering, Department of Underground Architecture and Engineering, Department of Bridge Engineering, Department of Structural Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering, and Department of Hydraulic Engineering. In addition, it has a postdoctoral mobile station in civil engineering and a postdoctoral mobile station in geological resources and geological engineering, and possesses three national-level research platforms: the State Key Laboratory for Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering, the National Engineering Technology Research Center for Prefabrication and Assembly of Civil Structures, and the Joint Research Center for Earthquake Engineering of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The college currently has 369 faculty and staff employed by the university, including 8 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 foreign academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of the European Academy of Sciences, 1 foreign academician of the Royal Belgian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and 3 foreign academicians of the Engineering Academy of Japan. There are 132 full senior professional titles and 108 associate senior professional titles. Currently, there are 9 doctoral programs and 12 master's program research directions, with 2059 undergraduate students, 1426 master's students, and 767 doctoral students (as of December 31, 2021).
