Department Introduction
The Department of Civil Engineering originated from the Railway Engineering Special Class established by Jiao Tong University in 1907, which was renamed the Civil Engineering Section in 1913 and transferred to Tangshan School of Jiao Tong University in 1920. In 1929, the Shanghai campus of Jiao Tong University re-established the Civil Engineering Section, known as the School of Civil Engineering. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, the Department of Civil Engineering was divided between Shanghai and Chongqing. In 1951, the Department of Civil Engineering of Fudan University was merged into that of Jiao Tong University. In 1952, the Department of Civil Engineering of Jiao Tong University was merged into Tongji University. In 1985, the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering was re-established, offering two specialties: Industrial and Civil Building, and Industrial Design. In 1992, Industrial Design was established as a separate department, which was merged into the School of Media Design in 1998. In 2003, the School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and the School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics were merged to form the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering.
The Department of Civil Engineering has the following secondary disciplines: Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering and Protective Engineering. It has a doctoral program in the first-level discipline and a postdoctoral research station. The Civil Engineering specialty was included in the national "Double First-Class" discipline construction list in 2017, received Class B funding from Shanghai Municipality for building world-class disciplines in 2012, was one of the first pilot units of the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" in 2010, was rated as a national characteristic specialty in 2008, and has passed the professional evaluation of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development four consecutive times. Among them, "Geotechnical Engineering" was approved as a Shanghai key discipline in 2007.
In terms of high-level talent development, the Department of Civil Engineering has so far introduced or cultivated more than 20 person-times of national/provincial and ministerial talent program recipients, including winners of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, "New Century Excellent Talents" of the Ministry of Education, "Young Top-Notch Talents" of the Central Organization Department, Shanghai Outstanding Academic Leaders, Shanghai Leading Talents, Shanghai Shuguang Scholars, Shanghai "Rising Star Program" scholars, Shanghai Pujiang Scholars, and Shanghai Chenguang Scholars.
The civil engineering discipline has distinctive characteristics, combines basic and applied research, and has achieved fruitful industry-university-research cooperation. Centering on the needs of urban construction and social development, it has formed research characteristics in marine civil engineering, underground engineering, long-span spatial structures and new structures, structural life-cycle reliability, engineering structure safety and disaster prevention, green building materials, and other disciplinary directions. Through industry-university-research cooperation with large enterprises such as Shanghai Construction Group and Shanghai Baosteel Group, the results have been applied to major engineering projects, such as the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, the Three Gorges Baiheliang Underwater Museum, the Shanghai Maglev and rail transit, the Shanghai World Expo venues, and the Capital Airport terminal. It has carried out scientific research cooperation and talent training with more than 20 universities and large enterprises in the United States, Japan, Germany, and other countries.
The Department of Civil Engineering adheres to a high starting point
